Hearing Evaluation in Houma

A comprehensive, clinically precise hearing evaluation performed by a Doctor of Audiology to give you clear answers and confident next steps.

A complete hearing evaluation is the first step toward better hearing. Our process looks beyond the basics—combining advanced diagnostic testing with a detailed communication needs assessment—to give you a full understanding of how your auditory system is functioning. You’ll leave with clarity, confidence, and a personalized plan based on your goals, not guesswork or insurance limitations.

What’s Included in Your Hearing Evaluation

Your evaluation includes two essential parts:

  1. A Diagnostic Hearing Evaluation, which measures the health and function of the peripheral auditory system.

  2. A Communication Needs Assessment, which explores how you hear in real life—speech, noise, fatigue, and everyday communication demands.

Together, these provide the most complete picture of your hearing health.

Part 1: Diagnostic Hearing Evaluation

Testing of the peripheral auditory system—the outer ear, middle ear, and inner ear.

This foundational battery determines whether hearing loss is present, the type of loss, and how your auditory system is functioning at a physiological level.

Includes:

  • Otoscopy
Examining the ear canal and eardrum using video imaging.

  • Tympanometry
Evaluating middle ear mobility and pressure.

  • Otoacoustic Emissions (OAEs)
Objective testing of cochlear (outer hair cell) function.

  • Comprehensive audiometry

    • Pure-tone air conduction

    • Pure-tone bone conduction

    • Speech Reception Threshold (SRT)

    • Suprathreshold speech recognition (word clarity at comfortable loudness)

This part answers:
Do you have hearing loss? Where is it located? How significant is it?

Part 2: Communication Needs Assessment

Testing of real-world hearing ability, central auditory processing demands, and everyday communication challenges.

This portion reveals how your hearing performs in everyday environments—not just in a quiet test booth—and completes the full picture of how your auditory system functions in real-world listening environments.

Includes:

  • Extended high-frequency audiometry
Detects subtle changes not shown on standard tests.

  • Uncomfortable Loudness Levels (ULLs)
Measures loudness tolerance and dynamic range.

  • Speech recognition at normal conversation levels
Assesses speech clarity in typical daily situations.

  • Acceptable Noise Level (ANL) testing
Determines how much background noise you can comfortably tolerate.

  • Speech-in-noise testing
Evaluates listening performance in challenging environments.

  • Standardized self-report questionnaires

    • Hearing Handicap Inventory for Adults (HHIA)

    • Listening Fatigue Questionnaire

This part answers:
How does your hearing affect your daily life, energy, confidence, and communication?

Why Our Evaluations Are Different

Many clinics offer brief screenings or simplified tests. Our evaluation is a full diagnostic and functional assessment that looks at how you hear—not just what you hear.

With us, you receive an evaluation that is:

  • Comprehensive and diagnostic
Covers both peripheral function and real-world communication needs.

  • Clinically precise
Based on audiology best practices and advanced testing equipment.

  • Performed entirely by a Doctor of Audiology
Not by a hearing aid specialist or retail technician.

  • Educational and empowering
You’ll understand your results and what they mean.

Personalized to your goals
Recommendations focus on your communication priorities—not a sales pitch.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the evaluation take?

This appointment is scheduled for 90 minutes.
This allows time for a full diagnostic evaluation, communication needs assessment, result review, and discussion of next steps without rushing any part of the process.

Can someone come with me?

Yes — and we strongly recommend it.
Patients benefit most when they bring their primary communication partner (such as a spouse or close family member) and the person who helps them make healthcare or financial decisions.
This helps everyone understand the results clearly and feel confident about next steps.

Do you accept insurance?

We do not participate as an in-network insurance provider. This allows us to offer a more comprehensive, unhurried evaluation without the limitations or restrictions of insurance-driven models.

However, we can still support you:

  • We can submit out-of-network claims as a courtesy when your plan allows, or

  • We can provide all documentation needed if you prefer to file for reimbursement yourself.

Many patients also use CareCredit for flexible payment options.

Can you evaluate my hearing if I already have hearing aids?

Yes.
We can always evaluate your hearing, and we encourage annual hearing tests to detect any changes and ensure your hearing needs are being met.

Regarding your devices:

  • If your hearing aids are unlocked and compatible, we can clean them and adjust programming based on updated test results.

  • If your devices are locked, we can still clean and maintain them, but we cannot program or verify their output.

Annual evaluations help ensure your hearing aids continue to support your communication goals.

Will I get my results the same day?

Yes — you receive your results during your appointment, and we take time to explain everything clearly.
You will also receive two copies of your results to take home:

  • A medical copy (complete diagnostic report)

  • A patient-friendly version with clear explanations for easy reference

We proudly serve patients from Houma, Thibodaux, Raceland, Gray, and surrounding communities throughout Terrebonne and Lafourche Parishes.
