Better Hearing Takes More Than Advanced Technology

An expensive hearing aid with advanced features may provide little benefit if it isn’t programmed appropriately for your hearing. The technology provides the capabilities. Fitting and programming determine how those capabilities are put to work for you.

Choosing suitable hearing aids is an important step. Making sure they deliver appropriate sound in your ears—and assessing how much they help—is just as important.

What Does a Hearing Aid Fitting Include?

A hearing aid fitting addresses both comfort and sound. Think about how shoes or jeans fit. Comfort matters, and hearing aids should also sit comfortably and securely. But hearing aids need an acoustic fit, too: the sound they deliver must be matched to your hearing needs.

✓ Physical fit considers how the devices sit in or behind your ears, including the comfort and placement of the parts that go into your ear canals.

✓ Acoustic fit considers how much amplification you receive at different pitches and sound levels, along with how the hearing aids process sound.

Programming is one part of fitting. It adjusts the hearing aids’ sound settings. The broader fitting process also includes checking physical fit, verifying performance, teaching you how to use the devices, and assessing the results.

The steps included in hearing aid fitting and reprogramming services can vary between providers. Knowing what a service includes helps you understand the care you will receive.

Our Hearing Aid Fitting in Houma: A Five-Step Process

Dr. Erin Rushing has refined CHS’s approach to hearing aid fitting in Houma over more than 10 years. Each step provides information that guides the next.

01

Start With a CHS Hearing Evaluation

Before we program hearing aids, we require a hearing evaluation performed at our office. Your hearing results and everyday communication needs help guide the recommendations and programming that follow.

Already own hearing aids? We still begin with our evaluation before programming your devices.

02

Check the Devices and Physical Fit

Before your fitting, we test the hearing aids against the manufacturer’s published specifications to confirm that they perform as expected.

We also assess how the devices fit your ears, including comfort and placement.

03

Program and Verify the Acoustic Fit

Dr. Rushing programs the hearing aids using your hearing results. Real-ear measurements check the sound the devices deliver in your ear canals and guide adjustments toward prescriptive targets.

She also assesses listening comfort and makes adjustments when needed.

Learn to Use and Care for Your Hearing Aids

A fitting includes instruction on inserting, operating, and cleaning your hearing aids. We help you become familiar with the devices and answer your questions. For additional information about adjusting to and caring for your devices, read the NIDCD guide to hearing aids.

05

Refine the Settings and Measure Benefit

Your fitting package includes two follow-up visits. These give us time to discuss your everyday listening experience, answer questions, and refine settings as needed.

The final visit includes benefit testing to measure the difference your hearing aids are making and guide recommendations for further improvement.

Programming and Reprogramming Existing Hearing Aids

If you already own hearing aids, you may need adjustments to their existing settings. This is often called reprogramming.

Reprogramming is part of what we may recommend, but first we need to understand your hearing and check the devices. Problems with performance may involve programming, physical fit, maintenance, or more than one factor.

If Your Hearing or Listening Needs Change

A change in your hearing doesn’t automatically mean you need new hearing aids. Many prescription hearing aids can be reprogrammed to accommodate changes in your hearing or everyday listening needs.

Whether your current devices remain suitable depends on their capabilities, condition, and the amount of amplification you need. Our hearing evaluation and device checks help determine whether we can adjust your existing hearing aids or should discuss other options.

The care you need may range from programming adjustments to a more extensive refitting. We’ll explain the recommended services and follow-up based on what we find.

Can We Program Your Hearing Aids?

We can work with many prescription hearing aids, but not every device. Some hearing aids are locked or have programming restrictions that may require you to return to the original provider.

Before scheduling an evaluation for reprogramming, contact us with your hearing aids’ brand, model, and where you purchased them. We’ll confirm whether we can work with them. If we can, the first step is a hearing evaluation at CHS.
